May is almost gone and there is just on a month before our big day out!!! The Australian Hypnotherapy Conference is coming up fast on the 3rd and 4th July, and the last tickets are being offered. The Yapko post conference workshop now has a waiting list, so if you want to see Michael in action, the conference is the only option left. Having looked at the full conference schedule Michael Yapko is excited to be here and is looking forward to a good turn out in support of his latest work, Depression is Contagious. This is a powerful presentation. I saw it in San Diego and it is what convinced me to do whatever I could to get him out here for the ASCH.  Go online and book your ticket now if you haven't already. CLICK HERE.

We are also announcing a new single day rate. If you can only make it to one day of the conference you can purchase a single day ticket for just $279 per person. CLICK HERE

We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Les Bullock, one of the pioneers of the field in this country, who championed the cause of hypnotherapists against all comers. It was a good innings, but Les will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

All the best and remember...the ASCH is your association

This has just arrived from Hypnothoughts:  author unknown

It's with deep respect that I'm writing to let you know that Gil Boyne passed away today.

Few people in the field of hypnosis are as respected as Gil Boyne.  This isn't surprising, as few people have contributed as much as he did.

The legacy of this great man speaks for itself far better than I ever could.  I also know his memory doesn't need my help in lasting the test of time.

I will say briefly, for the few of you who didn't know of him, that you were absolutely impacted by him.

Gil Boyne will forever be an icon in the history of hypnosis.  I was thrilled to meet him in person and speak at his conference.  I was humbled by his membership on this site.

Our profession has lost a giant who can only be replaced by the aggregate of his many students.  No single person will fill his shoes, though we will all stand on his shoulders.

Gil Boyne was a force of nature in our field who will always be
remembered with deserved reverence.

Hi All ASCH Members,
By now most of you would have heard about Les passing away last Friday evening. It was very quick and we are all very shocked. It is a great loss to the hypnotherapy world and to his many friends and family.

Les's funeral was held on Friday 21st May at 11.15am at Macquarie Park Cemetery & Crematorium, Sydney

In place of flowers we would appreciate if you sent a donation to the Heart Foundation or Diabetes Australia. (ASCH donated $100)

Thank you
Elizabeth, Margaret, William, David, John Bullock and families

TECHNIQUES OF HYPNOTIC INDUCTION

George Gafner, MSW, LCSW

Crown House Publishing 2010

ISBN 978-184590292-6

This is George Gafner’s fifth book on clinical hypnosis and is well worth reading. It deals with one of the most important aspects of clinical hypnosis and that is the hypnotic induction. Before any therapy can be successfully administered, the client must be in a suitable trance state. The book deals with both indirect and direct hypnotic inductions.  Metaphors are used for both types of induction. Direct Inductions are achieved when the client allows themselves to become part of a structured guided imagery experience. Some clients may not respond well to this approach and the therapist has the alternative of using an indirect induction. With this method trance occurs by reading the client a story about someone else and the sensations they experience. If neither method achieves the desired state of trance, a third approach called a confusion induction can be introduced. The book can be a useful reference for both the novice and the experienced hypnotherapist.

The "Getting Started" section touches on issues that confront just about all therapists in their practices. It discusses negative stereotypes, control and intimacy, the hypnosis setting and amongst other things, what does literature say about hypnosis. An excellent reference section provides the reader with a plethora of sources for further reading or research. I particularly liked the writing style and the explanations of the metaphors given in the form of "Notes for Practice" at the end of each section.

The author has added a personal touch with this approach that shows his more than thirty years of clinical practice which he willingly shares with the reader. He uses the notes for practice as a device to help the personal growth and development of the therapist.

This is a book I would recommend for any therapist’s reference library. It is easy to read (only 142 pages) and offers a different and creative approach to inductions. The recommended retail price is listed at $49.95Reviewed by Barry Shirley

Metaphor of the Month

Life is like a seed. It will never grow unless planted and nourished.

Life is like a river. With all its bends and rapid falls, one must follow the right path or else you'll lost your way to the sea.

Life is like a box of chocolates. You'll never know what you're going to get.

Life is like a bagel. It's delicious when it's fresh and warm, but often it's just hard. The hole is the middle is its great mystery, and yet it wouldn't be a bagel without it.

Life is like eating grapefruit. First you have to break through the skin; then it takes a couple of bites to get used to the taste, and just as you begin to enjoy it, it squirts you in the eye.

Life is like a banana. You start out green and get soft and mushy with age. Some people want to be one of the bunch while others want to be top banana. You have to take care not to slip on externals. And, finally, you you have to strip off the outer coating to get at the meat.

Life is like cooking. It all depends on what you add and how you mix it. Sometimes you follow the recipe and at other times, you're creative.

Life is like a jigsaw puzzle, but you don't have the picture on the front of the box to know what it's supposed to look like. Sometimes, you're not even sure if you've got all the pieces.

Life is like a maze in which you try to avoid the exit.

Life is like riding an elevator. It has a lot of ups and downs and someone is always pushing your buttons. Sometimes you get the shaft, but what really bothers you are the jerks.

Life is like a room full of open doors that close as you get older.

Life is like a puppy dog always searching for a street full of fire hydrants.

Life is like a poker game. You deal or are dealt to. It includes skill and luck. You bet, check, bluff, and raise. You learn from those you play with. Sometimes you win with a pair or lose with a full house. But whatever happens, it's best to keep on shuffling along.

Life is like a novel. You are the author and everyday is a new page.

Life is like photography. We develop from negatives.

Life is like money. You can spend it any way you wish, but you only spend it once.

Life is like an onion. You peel off layer after layer and sometimes you weep.

Life is like a whisper. If you only try and stop wailing you'll suddenly realize that it is there.

Life is like a pencil. You can be sharpened, you can correct mistakes, and you can leave a mark.

Joke !

An old nun
who was living in a convent next to a construction site

noticed the coarse language of the workers

and decided to spend some time with them to correct their ways.

She decided she would take her lunch,
sit with the workers
 and talk with them.
She put her sandwich in a brown bag
and

walked over to the spot where the men were eating.

She walked up to the group and with a big smile said:
"and do you men know Jesus Christ?"

They shook their heads and looked at each other very confused.
One of the workers looked up into the steelworks and yelled out,
"Anybody up there know Jesus Christ?"
One of the steelworkers yelled down 'why'?
The worker yelled back,
"Cos his wife's here with his lunch"
