Publication Standards

Guidelines for Authors

The journal is published twice each year in the Australian Spring and Autumn.  Its focus is on the professional application of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, covering aspects of original clinical research, theoretical, historical and related reports, and book reviews.

The Journal is abstracted in Psychological Abstracts, PsycINFO database and EMBASE/Excerpta Medica.

All manuscripts, books for review, other editorial matters and journal enquiries should be addressed to:

Articles submitted for the Journal are reviewed by members of the Editorial Board and other qualified readers.  They are selected on the basis of merit, contribution and interest. The name of the author is not considered.

NOTE: Articles are rejected by the Editorial Board if they do not meet the required standards of academic journals. The most frequent reason is the absence of supportive referencing to other authoritative sources, from reading or other research, on the topic being written about. Personal opinion and theories about a subject, like simple case studies, need to be backed up by formal references to the work of other writers who have investigated the same or related fields.

Subscribers to the Journal include most of the major hospitals and universities in Australia, the United Kingdom, the USA, Malaysia and New Zealand, where they are used for academic research, as well as for general reading.

Manuscripts for consideration should be submitted electronically to the editor or by mail on USB drive. The submissions are to be double spaced in Word Perfect, Microsoft Word, Wordstar, Office Writer, Microsoft Works, and/or Mac Write. The word processing programme used and version number are to be specified in writing on the title page of the manuscript.

Articles do not usually exceed 4,500 words.

The Editorial Board of the AJCHH has adopted the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Fourth Edition (1994) as the guideline for reference citations.

1.       References

References are cited in the body of the text using the author’s surname and the date of publication in parenthesis. For example, (Samuels, 1991), or “Samuels (1991) surveyed the practices of ….” Reference lists are presented at the end of the article.  The lists combine journals, books and other materials.  Footnotes are not used. Endnotes are not permissible.

References are listed by the author’s names in inverted order, alphabetized letter by letter. When more than one author’s works are listed, the entry is arranged by the year of publication with the earliest year listed first.

References are not numbered.

JOURNAL ENTRY:

Author. Year of publication. Title. Name of Journal, volume number (issue number), inclusive pages.

For example:

The Publication Manual is consulted for more complicated reference problems, writing styles, headings, quotations, punctuation, capitalisation and italics questions. The manual is available from APA Publications Sales, 1200 Seventeenth St, NW, Washington DC 20036 USA.

Authors are advised to keep photocopies of all cited articles, including full reference information (journal issue cover and table of contents) as well as photocopies of reference book details (title and copyright pages and quoted passages) for official verification and submission, if required. This is to protect the author and the Journal against any claims of plagiarism or misquoting.

2.       Abstract

An abstract of not more than 150 words, typed on a separate page accompanies each manuscript. The abstracts and articles should contain a presentation of the problem, theoretical bias, central thesis, method, results and conclusions.

3. Cover Page

A separate cover page is required showing title, author’s name(s) and affiliation, and the address of the person to whom proof and reprint requests may be sent.

The materials presented in the journals are copyrighted. Apart from any fair dealing for the purposes of private study, research criticism, or review, as permitted under the Copyright Act, no part may be reproduced by any process without written permission. A word from our Patron
HELEN REDDY

A number of years ago I retired from stage and screen to pursue other loves of my life - one of which brought me to hypnotherapy. Now as a Clinical Hypnotherapist myself, it’s an honour to be associated with and support the endeavours of the ASCH. Maybe you are a therapist looking for an association to belong to, someone considering becoming a hypnotherapist yourself, or perhaps you are a member of the public looking for the best professional assistance available. You’ve come to the right place. The ASCH is here to serve you in whatever way it can. Please, just ask.
